Commercial News WEEK REVIEWED STRONG SHARE PRICES GOVERNMENT STOCK ACTIVE Strength among all classes of securities was further accentuated on the Auckland Stock Exchange this week. Supplies in no section were in any way adequate to meet the demand and price movements in the great majority of instances were against buyers. There was quite a buoyant tone to the market, except on Thursday, when a temporary lull saw a small sales list. A feature of investment conditions for some time has been the free movement of Government issues, particularly war loan stocks, all of which are still obtainable at a discount. Sellers of these stocks are much more numerous and accommodating than holders of the old-established 4 per cent lines, but although brokers have transferred some large parcels in recent weeks no selling pressure has developed, and the demand has held firm. Most of the dealing continues to centre around the 3 per cent 1953-56 Liberty Loans. Outstanding in the business in banking scrip was the sharp rise in National Banks of New Zealand to 3/ above par. a price approximating le\"els before the war. Commercials of Australia also moved up, while Xew Zealands were steady at £2 2/ until marked back ex dividend. Insurances were again very firmly held, business being confined to New Zealands, which jumped to a new peak at £-1 6/9. These shares now give a yield of £2 17/7, against £4 4/9 when they were at their lowest level last year, £2 19/. Trading was fairly animated over the assortment of Dominion shares, and among prominent advances were those in Reid Rubbers. Farmers' Fertilizers and Wellington Woollens. Leading breweries receded from recent high levels, while Consolidated Bricks were easier. Retail stores disclosed few changes and farmerfinance shares were solidly supported, though ittle business resulted in this group. Auckland Gas, which have been very firm and quiet lately, sold at an advance of 2d. Australian issues were slightly more active this week. Values were firm, and attention was focused on British Tobacco and Dunlop Rubber shares, for which the market at this centre had not been tested for some months. Both issues reflected the firming trend. LATEST SALES Sales since last review are:— Banks.—Com. of Aust., 17/2 (2), 17/3 (3): Com. of Aust.
