BARLEY AND BREWING

Opposition to the encouragement of barley growing for brewing purposes was expressed by Mr. J McAulay at a meeting of the South Canterbury Executive of the Farmers' Union, when a letter detailing increased prices authorised for barley grown for malting was received from the Dominion secretary (Mr. A. P. OShca). "As the result of resolutions passed by the Barley Advisory Committee at a meeting on June 10 representations were made to the stabilisation Commission asking for an overall increase of 3d a bushel to be paid for aU barley used for malting. Approval has been obtained for this incroMO from the Director of Stabilisation, subject to maltsters absorbing the increased cost which. I understand, they are prepared to do," wrote Mr. O'Sftea. He said that the increases would become operative for all malting barley harvested in the coming season. A motion wos carried that further growing of barley for other than stock food or human consumption be discouraged. Mr. McAulay said: "If barley is Brown for those two specific purposes then it will be all right to grant an increased price. I am not tilting at the consumption of beer as a beverage." he added, "but the food position is going to become serious." Hβ mentioned that if increased prices were granted for barley, many acres would be grown under contract for maltsters and the grain would not be available for more essential use.
