IN NEED OF REPAIR
MANY FRANKLIN BRIDGES
(0.C.) PUKEKOHE, Monday. It was well known that dozens of old bridges in the Franklin County had rotted to the point where their ability to carry modern loads was doubtful, stated the county engineer, Mr. A. C. Bettany, in his report to a council meeting to-day. The council had not sufficient staff to make continuous regular inspection of these structures, stated the report, and as bridges were reaching the doubtful stage more rapidly than funds,'manpower and material became available for their repair, it seemed that the council had to adopt the policy of carefully watching old structures and accepting the risk of an occasional collapse when human judgment failed. J B The report stated that one bridge on the Kaiaua-Miranda coast road was in such a bad condition that it had to be closed to all traffic, and the greater part of it was now being rebuilt. A small bridge in the Moumoukai district would have to be renewed at the earliest possible moment.
