EVIL RAMPANT IN AUSTRALIA Rec. 9.30 a.m. CANBERRA, this day. Black marketing has become so rampant in Australia that some Ministers believe the whole financial structure of the Commonwealth is being endangered. They are greatly concerned about the ease with which black market operators Can escape the severe penalties provided under the Black Marketing Act. . Prosecutions have been unsuccessful and it is known that the Minister of Trade and Customs, Mr. Keane, favours a complete review of the Act. He will consult the Commonwealth Prices Commissioner, Professor Copland, this week on the effectiveness of the Act in relation to the incidence of the black market evil. On the result of this discussion will rest the terms of the submission Mr. Keane proposes to make to Cabinet for an amendment of the Act.. FOUND ON ATTU BOOK IjOST IN UNITED STATES SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 26. Dr. Edwin Lee, of California, received back a book on anatomy to* day which he lost five years ago. An American soldier found it on Attu Island. One of Dr. Lee's classmates in the College of Medical Evangelists was a Japanese, who .went to Japan to practice medicine. COMMENTATOR RESIGNS NEW YORK, Sept. 26, The New York Post says Cecil Brown, radio commentator, has resigned from the service of the Columbia Broadcasting System, which paid him 58,000 dollars a year. Mr. Brown told the Press that his fervent anti-Fascist attitude had led the C.B.S. to adopt a policy of censorship under which he found it impossible to work. The Post says Mr. Brown's resignation was the climax of a week of bitter controversy in radio circles resulting from the apparent trend of networks to censor outspoken commentators. Mr. Brown was stationed in Australia for a time early in 1942. DIAMOND SHIPMENT ______ -o CAPETOWN, Sept. 26. A very large shipment of industrial diamonds, valued at more than £3,500,000, has just been transferred from Johannesburg to Canada. The shipment, which was undertaken at the request of the Allied Governments, is believed to be the largest and most valuable in the history of the industry.
