THE CHANNEL CHECK
WHY THE HUNS HALTED
M. Henri Queille, Senator and former member of the Cabinet in France, told how, a few months after the armistice, a high French officer in conversation with a hi~h German officer said to the German- _ You made an irreparable mistake m not following up your offensive by crossing the Channel." "Who knows?" replied the German officer. "In 1914, you French were defeated at Charleroi, but you made a wonderful come-back on the Marne. Would not the situation have been similar if on our left flank we had left an undestroyed French Army?" ■
