INDEPENDENT GROUP
CANDIDATE'S BROADCAST
Declaring that both the Labour and National parties were dictated to by selfish outside interests, Flying-Officer C. Drummond, candidate for Wellington West, in a broadcast address last night made a plea for support of the Independent Group sponsored by the People's Movement, of wruch he was a nominee. If the Independent Group were elected to Parliament, said the sneaker, provision would be made for expending £100,000,000 on national reconstruction in the first year after the war. He advocated a mufti allowance of £50 to discharged servicemen, with a reduction for men who had seen only a short period of service. Gratuities should be granted at the rate of 2/6 for each day spent overseas, and possibly 1/6 a day for men mobilised for a reasonable time in New Zealand. The speaker claimed that public servants should be given access to the Arbitration Court. Compulsory retirement after 40 years' service should be introduced.
