SWEEPS OVER FRANCE
ATTACKS ON AIRFIELDS British Official Wireless Rec. 11 a.m. RUGBY, Aug. 19. Formations of Marauders 826 attacked airfields at Poix and Amiens-Glissy, in France, early today, states a joint R.A.F. and United States communique. Poix was also later attacked by a formation of R.A.F. Mitchells. Dominion and Allied Spitfires escorted and covered the medium bomber operations and Typhoons and Spitfires made supporting sweeps over Northern France. Sixteen enemy fighters were destroyed • during this fifth day of home-based bombers and fighters' latest "airfield softening" sweeps over northern France. The fighters shot down nine during the evening and the Marauders and fighters seven in earlier attacks.
