ESTIMATES UPSET
NEW CITY FIRE STATION
COST MAY REACH £176,000
In order to further the completion of the new Central Fire Station, the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board to-day decided to seek permission from the Government to raise a loan of £40,000. The Loans Board had already sanctioned the loan. The chairman, Mr. B. Brigham, said the original estimate of the cost of the new station, including the site, was £124,000, but unfortunately the war had brought about conditions over which the board had no control, and which' had meant considerable increase in costs. It was likely the total cost of the new station would be about £176,000. "The Government requisitioned much of the material we had counted upon, and we had to replace it at about double cost," said Mr. Brigham. "Had we been able to proceed as originally intended we would not have been landed in the present unfortunate position."
