ARE YOU A DRUG ADDICT? Persons who use drugs, such as opium or cocaine, in order to relieve ;aded nerves or produce a feeling of well-being, are known as drug addicts, or are in danger of becoming so. Such drugs are habit-forming and generally create a craving for their continued and increased use, resulting in impaired health, mental weakness, and nervous debility. Alcohol, the poison which provides the "kick" in whisky, wine, beer, etc., is a habit-forming narcotic drug similar to opium. While there are many persons who never, or seldom, drink to excess, there are many others who cannot resist the craving for alcohol. They are drug addicts. Some of them are doubtless known to you. In a recent broadcast address, Bishop Liston, of Auckland, advised those who had formed the drink habit to try doing without alcoholic liquor for a week or a month. If they found it difficult to do so, then they had better "step on to the safety zone and give it up altogether." That is excellent advice Try it yourself. Remember, alcohol is a harmful habit-forming narcotic drug.—United Temperance Societies. (Ad.) The earth shines, but not in the same way as the stars shine.
