RELATIVE TO OI>D BILL. Kahuranaki, winner of the maiden event, is a relative by Tiderace to Old BUI' Florence Mills and Quadroon. Though trained at Awapuni, Kahuranaki is owned by the Hastings and Napier sportsmen, Messrs. M. Greenwood and H. H. Fharazyn. These gentlemen rarely race ta this district, and apart from Kahuranaki, Old Bill is the only other horse to carry their colours here for a number of years. A VERSATILE GAI/LOFER Strip, which has won three hurdle races this season, was returned to flat racing at Gore, where he won the Gore Racing Club Handicap and followed this ud by a win in the Oamaru Cup last week. According to a southern report, it was intended to race Strip over the hie fences at Riverton at Easter, but after his good form at Oamaru it was decided to keep him to flat racing in the meantime. BEATEN BY CAST-OFF In addition to gaining second place with Yogi in the Hawke's Bay Cup, the Napier owner, Mr. F. Ormond, had to be content with a similar placing in the chief sprint event with Kol Ragi. It was ironical that the winner should _ be Ivar, a twice broken down cast-off from Mr. Ormond's stable. Earlier in his career Ivar showed good form, but he went amiss and was given away by Mr. Ormond. He eventually passed into the h™ds of Mr J. Hennah who has adopted a natient policy with him. On haturaay nothing looked better in ttie birdcage, and it was pleasing to note that after the ?ace on the hard going he pulled up well and showed none of his old symptoms.
