FAILED TO REPORT

' RESERVIST SENTENCED "It seems a little harsh that a man should not be given a little latitude in relation to his military obligations," said Mr. Terry when appearing at the Police Court this morning for Ernest Albert Edward Tier, who denied having failed to report and failed to notify his change of address. Evidence was given on behalf of the military authorities that Tier reported on November 16 and accepted an issue of army clothing, iHe was instructed to report on November 18, but he did not do so. He did not reply to registered letters subsequently sent to him. Mr. Terry said that when Tier was called up for military service he was undergoing a prison sentence, and on the day of his release he was taken to the Drill Hall. He said that he wanted time to make provision for his wife and child. He put in an application to the Appeal Board and was told that he would be taken from the mobilisation list. With regard to the change of address he had notified the post office and had thought that this was sufficient. He had no objection to going into camp. • The magistrate, Mr. J. Morling, S.M., said "that Tier had had ample time to fix up his affairs.. He would be sentenced to two months' imprisonment on the first charge and convicted arid discharged on the other.
