BIGGER C.P.O.
ANOTHER STOREY
CABINET ALLOTS £24,000
The Postmaster - General, Mr. Webb, announced to-day that Cabinet had agreed to the allocation of £24,200 for. the erection of an additional storey on the new Chief Post Office building in Auckland. Work would be put in hand, he said, when war conditions permitted. Mr. Webb said that additional accommodation was already urgently required. Over 900 were working in the Post Office at present, and the place was over-crowded. The provision of another storey on the new building would greatly relieve the position. "It must be remembered, said Mr. Webb, "that over £1,000,000 is handled every day in the Post Office." Referring to the employment of women, Mr. Webb said that over 4500 had been engaged by the P. and T. Department throughout the country to take the places temporarily of men who were now overseas. They were doing splendid work, he said, and were being trained in every department.
