MINISTER'S REGRET
HIKURANGI HOLD-UP
Regret that the miners at Hikurangi had taken direct action was expressed this morning by the Minister of Mines, Mr. Webb. He said it was true he had been interviewed by the men while he was there, regarding the question of a doctor for the district. He told them he would discuss the position with the Minister of Health when he returned to Wellington.
The men were wrong in stopping work, he said. They had a legitimate case in asking for a doctor. Mining was a dangerous occupation, and lack of a doctor at a time of disaster might cost many lives, but the men had not helped their case bv stopping work. He had already taken action regarding their request, and the Health Department was doing its best to get a doctor for that district. He appealed to the men to return to work immediately.
