CROSS-CHANNEL FIRE
ARTILLERY IN ACTION Rec. 2 p.m. LONDON, April 5. British heavy guns came into action across the Straits of Dover after midnight and kept up a cannonade for nearly five hours. The Germans replied, hut later their bombardment fell away. Bursting shells lit up the English Channel and roused the inhabitants of south coast towns. Many spent the night in shelters. This morning German transChannel guns were again in action. Later shells fell in the vicinity of Dover. For the first time for a long period coastal towns heard daylight shell warnings. Brilliant sunshine prevailed over the Dover Straits this morning. Another shell warning sounded in south-east coastal towns in the afternoon, shortly after which there was a heavy explosion.
