GIRL'S BRAVERY

RESCUE "ATTEMPT

HUMANE SOCIETY HONOUR

A drowning fatality at. Muriwai Beach on January 25 and a valiant though vain attempt to save life had a sequence at the meeting of the Auckland City Council last night, when the -Mayor, Mr. Allum, presented Miss Jean Fraser- with a framed certificate of the Royal Humane Society. The Mayor recalled that Miss Fraser had been walking along the beach when she saw two young boys in distress. While going to their aid she noticed that a young man, MrRichard Joel Hopkins, who had gone to help the children, was himself in difficulties. As the two boys were being carried inshore she at once went to the aid of Hopkins. In spite of a desperate effort by Miss Fraser, however, Mr. Hopkins unfortunately lost his life, but, said the Mayor, this did not in any way detract from the gallant act.

Attention was called to Miss Fraser's bravery by the senior stipendiary magistrate at Auckland, Mr. J. H. Luxford.
