WESTMERE TIP.
HOUSEHOLDERS PROTEST
The municipal rubbish-tip at Westmere and its condition, brought a. deputation from the Westmere Householders' Progressive Association to the meeting of the City Council last night in support of a petition bearing 633 signatures praying that the council cease depositing and burning raw rubbish in that locality. The spokesmen wore Messrs. Kilburn and Burgess, and they emphasised the growing menace of the tip in attracting rats, flies and other vermin. It might be an "innocent-looking tip, but the smell from it was not so. Sometimes people wondered if they were at Westfield and not Westmere. The proximity of the tip to the only area for children playing was another important factor. Protests had been made for some years, but the menace was allowed to persist. The Mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, stated that the council had not received the co-operation it had the right to expect from other authorities. They did not wish any section of the community to suffer from anything that was avoidable.
The matter was referred to the works committee.
