THREE MEN SENTENCED

PUNISHMENT FOR CRIME

Remarking that the prisoner had a very bad list and had been declared an habitual criminal by the Court in Wellington in 1939, Mr* Justice Callan. in the. Supreme Court to-day, sentenced Walter Fraser Sherrifs Harneiss, aged 45, blacksmith, to two years' imprisonment on each of five charges of housebreaking, the sentences to be concurrent. On a charge of attempted housebreaking a sentence of six months was passed, to be concurrent with the other sentences.

On a charge of breaking and entering a dwellinghouse and theft therein, Harold George Carter, aged 23, a soldier, was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment. His Honor said prisoner did not have a clear, record.

John Kaio, aged 24, a Maori, was admitted to probation for two years on a charge of unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl of 14 years. He was also ordered to pay £5 towards the costs of the prosecution. His Honor said the overtures which led to the offence had been made by the girl.
