BURNED TO DEATH

MAORI WOMAN'S FATE

TRAGEDY NEAR RAWENE

(0.C.) WHANG ARE I, this day. A 90-year-old Maori woman, Mrs. Wirihita Manuera, was incinerated when the three-roomed shack in which she lived alone in Waima Valley, near Rawene, was destroyed by fire before dawn to-day. Her daughter, who resided nearby, was awakened to see the shack aflame. No assistance was possible. The body was recovered later. It is believed that the fire was caused by the ignition of firewood stacked in the hearth, Mrs. Manuera usually raking together the embers on retiring so that they would be alive the following morning. At the inquest held to-day a verdict of .accidental death was returned.
