PAINT RESTRICTION

GOVERNMENT'S ACTION

MANUFACTURE CUT DOWN (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. "Owing to restrictions on exports that have been imposed by supplying countries of raw materials used in the paint industry it has been deemed necessary to cdntrol the usage of these materials," said the Minister of Supply, Mr. Sullivan, to-night. "To procure supplies we must submit a programme to the supplying countries showing the ultimate use to which the paint manufactured will be put and we must base our orders on requirements for a year ahead," added the Minister. Indicating that the order came into force immediately, Mr. Sullivan said paint manufacturers henceforth could not manufacture in any period of three months a greater quantity of paint than one.-eighth of the quantity produced for 1941 after eliminating from the production any paint manufactured for the defence purchase officer, the building controller, public works, or any other Government Department and clearly shown as having been produced for one of the armed services or for some other authorised war purpose. All raw materials used in the manufacture of paint are now subject to control. Every person who imports any of the specified commodities must furnish within seven davs a return to the factory controller. Within 15 days of the last day in February, May, August and November a return must be supplied to the factory controller by all persons having in or under their control any quantity exceeding scwt, and every person who manufactures paint shall, not later than the 15th day of each month, submit a stock return showing sales of paint made during the preceding month. The same stipulation is made regarding the sale of white lead, whether dry or in oil.
