STREET COLLECTIONS

ALLOCATION OF DAYS

ORGANISATIONS IN CITY

The needs of many organisations were stressed at a meeting held at the Auckland Town Hall this morning to discuss the allocation of days for street collections this year. Mr. H. J. Butcher presided. The town clerk, Mr. James Melling, said there had always been a feeling, as far as the Local Bodies' Association was concerned, that the street days should be restricted. It was agreed last year to have four ordinary street days, and seven days were allocated for patriotic collections. Mr. H. Wyllie, representing the Auckland Metropolitan Patriotic Committee, said he was not in a position to say at the moment how many days were required, but considered they would need as many as last year, and not less than seven. The Rev. J. D. Smith pointed to the needs of the Society for the Protection'of Women and Children, and said they had not put forward a claim since before the Avar. They must have support from somewhere, as their wide public services were saving calls in many ways. Unless they had some public support they would be in a difficult position. Mr. A. Gardner, for the Royal Life-Saving Society and Auckland Surf Life-Saving Association, said they would waive their claims so as not to clash with patriotic appeals. Mr. S. E. Langstone said the St. John Ambulance Association had a day on November 6 last year, when they collected £3386, and they would like to have a day about the same time. The claims of the orphanages were put forward by the Rev. T. Halliday and the Rt. Rev. Monsignor H. F. Holbrook, the latter suggesting an earlier date this year for the orphanage appeal. Brigadier A. J. Brooks, of the Salvation Army, suggested a Red Shield Day for patriotic purposes, to be organised by the Salvation Army. Mr. Butcher said that an offer to give help on a certain day would be 'appreciated. He added that all the suggestions would be contained in a report to the public safety committee of the City Council, and the representatives present Avould be notified of the decision made.
