Brigadier Inglis' Brilliant Services At Alamein

British Official Wireless Rec. 2 p.m. RUGBY, Feb. 18. An echo of Ala.mein fighting last summer was heara In the announcement of the award of a Bar to his D.S.O. to Brigadier L. M. Inglis, of the New Zealand military force, "for most brilliant service and brilliant leadership while in temporary command of the Second New Zealand Division."' The citation says: "He took over command at the close of the battle of Minquarquaim on June 27, 1942> and was responsible for extricating the division from a covering position that night. He directed the successful withdrawal on to the Alamein line and immediately carried out a reorganisation of the division for the fighting which followed, and at once stabilised the position. During the whole period he displayed great skill, determination, his personal direction and courage being a constant inspiration to everyone under his command." The commando raid on Rommel's headquarters at Sidi Rafa last winter is recalled in the dramatic account of reconnaissance behind the enemy lines which gains a Bar to the M.C. for Lieutenant-Colonel J. E. Haselden, Intelligence Corps.

Brigadier Inglis, of Timaru, was with the Machine-gun Corp in the last war when he won the M.C. He continued his interest in military matters in the Territorial force, and was promoted colonel in command of the Canterbury Battalion. Educated at Waitaki Boys' School, he was commissioned in the school cadets in 1912. He is a barrister and solicitor in civilian life, and was in partnership with his father in Timaru. He has always taken a keen interest in sport, especially cricket. He was awarded the D.S.O. for gallantry at Tobruk.
