CHRISTCHUKCH BY-ELECTION
(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday.
The official count in the Christchurch East by-election resulted in the majority of Miss Mabel Howard • (Government) being increased by 172 votes.
The final totals are:—Miss Howard, 4559; H. E. ■ Herring (Democratic Labour), 2578; M. E. Lyons (National), 2371; L. A. Efford (Peace candidate), 114; O. J. McKee (Independent Socialist), 22. Majority for Miss Howard, 1981.
There were 213 soldiers' votes, of these, Miss Howard received 86; Mr. Lvons, 49; Mr. Herring, 45; Mr. Efford, 3; Mr. McKee, 2.
