WIN FOR FIGHTERS

Bombers' Escorts _ Drive Off Nazis Over Dunkirk

N.Z. PILOT LEADS WING Rec. 1.30 p.m. LONDON, Feb. 16. British and American bombers, guided by Allied fighters, made two heavy attacks on Dunkirk docks. There was so much smoke from the fires started that it was difficult to see results, but the airmen reported much wreckage. Mosquitos were in action yesterday afternoon attacking the large railway workshops at Tours, which .was bombed for the first time on the previous day. These railway yards

are the key position of a supply route to the submarine base at St. Nazaire, and on the main line from Paris to Bordeaux. Many of the railway workshops are now full of wagons being repaired for the Germans, and the sidings are jammed with rolling stock. Fighters escorting Liberators home from raids on France had a running fight with Focke-Wulfs 190 from the vicinity of Dunkirk to within sight of England. Wing-Commander P. G. Jameson, D.F.C. and bar, of Wellington, led a Norwegian fighter wing, which destroyed seven Focke-Wulfs and damaged two. Wing-Commander Jameson shot down two. Several of the Huns we destroyed went down in flames and others dived into the sea," he said. "Altogether we saw from 40 to 50 Huns either attacking the Liberators or" flying home." Wing-Commander Jameson is a survivor of the aircraft-carrier Glorious and was picked up by a Norwegian tramp ship after three days without food or water on a Carley float. He has now destroyed at least nine aircraft, including two German flying-boats near Norway. R.A.F. fighters over northern France last night destroyed an enemy bomber. There were no reports of enemy activity over Britain last night.
