NAPLES BOMBED
DAMAGE ADMITTED Flying Fortresses Over Sicily For First Time
N.Z. Press Association.—Copyright Rec. 10.30 a.m. LONDON, Feb. 16. An Italian communique admits that great damage was done in the raids on Naples and Palermo, Sicily, yesterday afternoon. It says that seven people were killed and 15 injured at Naples and 98 killed and 297 injured at Palermo. American Flying Fortresses raided Sicily for the first time from North African bases when they heavily bombed the docks and shipping at Palermo, scoring a direct hit on a large merchantman. They also hit the oil tanks and dry docks. All the bombers returned. The Air Ministry, quoted by British Official Wireless, states: "Aircraft of the Fighter Command last night carried out intruder patrols over Northern France. An enemy bomber was intercepted and destroyed and railways were attacked. Our bombers attacked objectives in Belgium and western Germany. None of our aircraft is missing."
