PETROL SUPPLIES
I read with trepidation the newspaper report of the Mayor of Auckland's proposals to obtain a supply of petrol from the American authorities for the use of taxi drivers in the carrying of American servicemen passengers. Let careful consideration be given to the abuses which this system would invite from many taxi racketeers. Even now most any taxi will dodge or avoid a civilian or New Zealand serviceman prospective fare in preference for an American. The latter tips generously and is far less likely to argue about the fare charged. If taxi-drivers are supplied with American petrol for American servicemen, would it not be possible for them to refuse a New Zealand fare at any time on the grounds that they were at that moment using "American petrol for American servicemen. ANTI RACKET. ,
