NOT SO LATE
TROTTING ON SATURDAY
WHAT PUBLIC AID CAN DO
The facility with which racegoers at Alexandra Park on Saturday made up their minds to back their fancies w£s reflected in a noteworthy adherence to the race timetable,' the final event being run only ten minutes late. This latter fact was mentioned yesterday by Mr. A. E. Ford, tramways general manager, when referring to a complaint b3 r the Tramways Union against the late starting of races at the park at Christmas time. During the holiday period betting was not only of unprecedented volume, but the attendance also reached new high figures, and owing to the congestion delays occurred. It had been the intention of the Auckland Trotting Club to erect a new totalisator house long before this, but the war upset the plans. There were fewer people present on Saturday, but there was no shortage o'f money, and the investments, £84,963, an increase of £34,200 10/ on the amount wagered last year, clearly showed what can be done, with the assistance of the public.
