Munda And Buin Raided By U.S. Aircraft
POLICING GUADALCANAL Rec. noon. WASHINGTON, Feb. 15. l/uring Sunday morning Dauntless dive-bombers and Avenger torpedoplanes, escorted by Airacobras and Wildcats, attacked Munda, New Georgia. A large fire was started. All the United States planes returned, says the United States Navy communique No. 281. Later in the day a force of Airacobras and Wildcats strafed enemy positions at Munda. At noon a number of Liberator heavy bombers, escorted by Corsairs and Lightnings, attacked and scored three bomb hits on a large Japanese cargo ship near Buin, Bougainville Island, Between 25 and 30 enemy planes were intercepted and 11 of them were shot down. Two United States bombers and six fighters failed to return. Ground activities on Guadalcanalwere confined to patrolling and; policing.
