HOME GUARD SERVICE

TRAINING OF OWN OFFICERS ROTORUA, Sunday. The desire of the Maori people to have their own officers and noncommissioned officers for native Home Guard units was forcibly expressed at a large meeting of tribal representatives and- Home Guard units held to-day on the marae of the Arawa canoe at Whakarewarewa. The meeting v?as attended by the Minister in charge of the Maori War Effort, Mr. Paifeea, and by Sir Apirana Ngata, M.P.-..for Eastern Maori. Sir Apirana Ngata said the Government had instructed the army to give effect to the Maoris' wish to lead their own units. General Bell told the Maoris later that the welfare and safety of the Maori unit's, as with any other unit, demanded that the officers and noh-, commissioned officers should be efficient. Therefore, Maori officers and non-commissioned officers would not be chosen unless they were efficient.
