YACHT RUN DOWN

CREW ESCAPE SERIOUS INJURY

The crew of the 14ft yacht Marjorie were fortunate to escape serious injury or death about 4.30 on Saturday afternoon when the yacht was run down by a naval vessel and barge off Westhaven, after finishing a race in the "Victoria Club's regatta. The naval vessels were on a course up harbour towards Kauri Point and the yacht was coming across the harbour on starboard tack, making for Westhaven, when it was caught between the two naval vessels and rolled over. Spectators could see only one of the crew of four in the water after the naval vessels passed and feared a tragedy had occurred, but M. Parkes was picked up by the yacht Manene with an injured foot, W. Caskey jumped on to the barge, and the other two, W. Parkes and N. Hilliam, suffered injuries when the barge passed over them. After they had been taken ashore in the Manene the injured men received first aid attention. Neither was badly hurt. .

The yacht was extensively damaged, the mast broken and the mainsail torn to ribbons, and it is doubtful if it will be fit for sailing for some time.
