OBITUARY

DR. H. G. DENHAM

(0.C.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The death has 'occurred of Dr. Henry George Denham, rector of Canterbury University College, who early this year was elected an honorary member of the Society of Chemical Industry of Great Britain. Born at Christchurch in 1880, Dr. Denham was educated at the Christchurch Boys' High School and Canterbury University College. He took the degrees of Master of Arts and Master of Science in New Zealand, a doctorate of science at Liverpool, and a doctorate of philosophy at Heidelberg. Dr. Denham, who was Exhibition Research Scholar from 1906 to 1909, became a lecturer in chemistry and assistant professor at the University of Queensland in 1912. In 1921 and 1922 he was professor of inorganic chemistry at the Univercity of Capetown. Since 1926 he had been a member of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, of which he was elected chairman in 1934. He had been chairman of the Canterbury College Board of Governors since 1933. Dr. Denham was the author of a text-book of inorganic chemistry and numerous scientific papers. He was a fellow of the Institute of Chemists and a fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand.
