LIVE STOCK SUFFER

DRY SPELL UP NORTH

BUSH FIRES IN CONTROL (0.C.) WHANGAREI, this day. A good many cases of cattle being short of food and water were reported by Inspector W. R. McKenzie at yesterday's meeting of the Whangarei S.P.C.A. The chairman, Mr. A. F. Farmer, said that in a dry season such as the present it was inevitable that many cattle would be short of food. The society therefore would have to be careful not to be unjust, but at the same time the inspector would need to be vigilant to ensure that stock was supplied with ample water, even if that implied expense and inconvenience to owners. The week's rainfall amounted only to a tenth of an inch, which was useless except for dampening the bush fires, all of . which are now under control or extinguished. After sustained temperatures bordering on 100 degrees the weather is now uncomfortably cold at times.
