FEW ERRORS MADE

SOLDIERS FOR OVERSEAS

CHEST EXAMINATIONS

"Every effort is made to ensure that every soldier is absolutely fit when he leaves New Zealand for service overseas," said the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, this afternoon when opening the Green Lane Hospital. "Here and there, possibly, mistakes have been made," he added, "but never in the examination of so many have errors been so few. From the beginning the Government, on the recommendation of the Direc-tor-General of Medical Services, adopted the policy of having every recruit's chest X-rayed. "This procedure has been eminently justified, as shown by the fact that at least 1 per cent of the men examined have revealed some chest pathology. These cases, if they had been allowed to go overseas, would undoubtedly have become much worse and many lives would have been ruined. Instead of that, they are given early treatment, thus safeguarding their health and enabling them to continue as healthy I citizens."
