WAR WIDOWS' PENSIONS

ANSWER TO CRITICISM!

(P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Friday. In a statement to-day Mr. Denham, M.P., strongly criticised assertions made by Mr. A. C. Cameron when commenting on the handling of the affairs of returned men. ■, "Mr. Cameron's statement regarding widows' pensions is definitely wrong," said Mr. Denham. "He is reported as saying, 'When a .soldier was killed his widow's .. allowance stopped immediately, and it was-six or seven weeks before she received a pension.' That is absolutely nonsense. Allotments are paid to the widow for three months after the soldier's death. Mr. Cameron goes on to say that in the meantime the widow is expected, if desperate, to apply to the Social Security Department for means to carry on. This is contrary to fact. . Departmental officers contact every soldier's widow,, fill in a pension claim, and the pension is continued after the expiration of the three months."
