PURCHASE OF MINES

ACTION BY THE STATE

DOBSON AND WALLSEXD

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. The Minister of Mines, Mr. Webb, announced to-night that the Dobson colliery had been acquired by the Government and would be operated as a State coal mine as from February 22. The Minister said that negotiations had been going on for some months. With regard to the adjoining Wallsend colliery owned by Brunner Collieries, Ltd., the Minister said this mine had been assisted with Government finance for some'•years. The company repeatedly suggested that the colliery should be taken over by the State, and the Government eventually decided to adopt this course. Mr. Webb said he expected the colliery would also be taken over by the State on February 22. The Minister concluded that both Dobson and Wallsend coal was of a class of which there was definitely a limited supply in this country. The principal consumers of the coal were gasworks, railways and the cement industry.
