FUTURE OF THE E.P.S.

EXPENDITURE QUESTION The Auckland Suburban Local Bodies' Association, at a meeting last evening, decided to ask the Minister of Civil Defence, Mr. Wilson, to veto all Emergency Precautions Service expenditure, except that entailed in preserving a skeleton service and organisation. Members criticised the manner in which the metropolitan organisation had prepared a statement of expenditure, and a balance sheet for the period from October, 1939, to September, 3,942. They authorised their executive to consider and take any necessary action on the information supplied. In reply to a' question, Mr. I. J. Goldstine said that the E.P.S. organisation was in a state of flux. Steps had been taken to reduce staff, and the services of a number had been dispensed with. He was hopeful that a conference being held" at Wellington, and attended by the Mayor of Auckland, Mr. Allum, would result in information from the Minister as to the necessity or otherwise of continuing expenditure.
