CAUGHT AT NIGHT

LABOURER FOUND STEALING About 8.20 on the night of Febru>ary 5, Constable Russell, while on duty near the bottom of Nelson Street, heard a noise like a man clambering over a fence and investigated. He found Ngawati Slade, a labourer, aged 52, with a "piece of lead waste pipe worth 15/, in his hand. Slade admitted jumping over a fence and stealing the pipe, which was awaiting consignment to defence works.

These facts were given by SubInspector Joyce in the Police Court to-day when Slade appeared before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., and pleaded guilty. "You have a bad record," remarked the' magistrate, who sent Slade to prison for seven days.
