AUCKLAND TAXIS

MORE LICENSES SOUGHT NEW REGULATIONS FRAMED Taxi services in. Auckland will be discussed at a meeting of the Auckland Metropolitan Licensing Authority next Monday morning, as eight new applications for public taxis, and two for private taxis, have been received. The chairman of the authority, Mr. Sayegh, said this morning that at the meeting evidence in favour or against the granting of the licenses would be heard. To eliminate week-end and evening driving by men who have other employment, and to increase the number of cars available for essential requirements, two (regulations are to be passed by the Auckland Taxi Cab Control Committee next Tuesday. One regulation is that it shall be a condition of operation that a taxi cab, while plying for hire shall not be driven by a driver who is engaged in any employment other than the taxi cab industry. The other. regulation is that all taxi (public and private) operators not associated with the Atta or Checker organisations shall for a specified shift on one specified day of each week operate as a reserve essential work car on either the Atta or Checker telephone systems and carry out during the specified shift all directions issued by the telephone operators of the organisations. * The secretary of the committee, Mr. A. Sinclair, said to-day that taxi cab operators desiring to appeal against the decision must lodge a written objection with the Transport Licensing Authority before 4 p.m. on Wednesday, February 17, the day after the meeting. "Operators in the metropolitan district should lodge their appeals with the Auckland Transport Board, and those in the Manukau and Waitemata counties with the No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority," said Mr. Sinclair. "A great many men who have other work during the week drive cabs at night and in the week-ends, and this causes much of the scarcity of taxis during the day time."
