BATTLE WITH FIRES
ABANDONED AT PIPIWAI WORST DROUGHT SINCE 1919 (0.C.) WHANGAREI, this day With hundreds of acres of pasture reduced to ashes, but with their homes saved, settlers of Pipiwai have abandoned the attempt to stay further progress of the fire which, witn a change of the wind to-day, is sweeping towards Opahi timberlands. •' The hardest ,hit farmers have removed their stock to nearby properties, where the water shortage for drinking purposes is acute. Coupled as it is with the fire hazard, this is the worst drought Northland has known since 1919. Temperatures to-day are much cooler, but, although the winds are fluctuating, there is no immediate prospect of rain.
