ALBRECHT SUPREME SIX VICTIMS, WINNING HIT

The defeat of the leading team, Grafton-Y.M.C.A., the first outright win of the season by North Shore and a sensational finish were features of the senior championship matches of the Auckland Cricket Association last Saturday. Parnell vanquished Grafton by seven wickets, the match being over at' six o clock. Grafton declared with 171 for nine wickets, the left-handed colt, F. Rogers, being highest scorer with 42. Aggressive batting by S. G. Hay and B. Sutcliffe, two other left-handers, paved the way for Parnell's win. Hay took 23 off one over from G. Wallace (two sixes, two fours, a two and a single). Wallace bowled five overs which cost 54 runs for only one wicket. Sutcliffe also hit two sixes, off Burke and Martin. Hay scored 54, while Sutcliffe was unbeaten with 69.

Low scoring was again the order at North Shore, where the home side dismissed Army Service Corps cheaply in each innings and declared its own innings closed with the total of 110. A.S.C. batted two short in the second innings. At one stage Eden-Ponsonby-Balmoral had eight wickets down for 43 against University-Middlemore. Later A. J. Postles and G. J. Langton came to the rescue in a last-minute stand which yielded 67 runs, and the total reached 126.

This proved a great hurdle for the opposition, which was level when the last man, S. V. Albrecht, went to the wicket. University had claimed extra time owing to a late start, and there were still four balls to go when Albrecht faced up to Postles. The first two were safely kept out, the batsman was dropped behind by Kent off the next, and he scored the winning hit with a drive for two past mid-on off the last ball of the day. It was one of the most exciting finishes witnessed at Eden Park for a long time. By its success University takes the lead in the championship, by three points from Grafton. The leading batsmen of the afternoon were:—B. Sutcliffe (Parnell), 69 not out; S. C. Hay (Parnell), 54; A. J. Postles (Eden), 53; F. Rogers (Grafton), 42; W. H. Cooper (University), 38; H. T. Pearson (University), 35; R. R. McKay (Parnell), 31 not out; J. H. E. RussellGreen (North Shore), 31. Some fine bowling performances were registered, the best being:—S. V. Albrecht (University), six for 27; H. J. H. Harrison (Eden), five for 39; E. S. Prentice (North Shore), three for 13 and four for 9; J. Cowie (North Shore), two for 14 and three for five; G. A. Richards (North Shore), four for 24; B. A. Killeen, the 1936 All Black (A.S.C.), four for 38; J. A. Forsman (A.S.C.), who opened four for 54; F. Goodsir (Parnell), four for 78° AJ.
