DEARE'S RINK WINS

ROTORUA BOWLS FINAL SKOGLUNJVS IJPHILTj FGIHT (Special.) ROTORUA, this day. Down 15 on the first seven heads and his own score not opened—that was the position which yesterday afternoon faced Skoglund's Otahuhu rink in the final of the Rotorua bowling tournament against the Auckland one led by G. A. Deare. The latter was in grand form, and it was mostly his play which brought about the commanding advantage. In several of the early heads he changed a losing position to that of a winning one. Otahuhu got a break at last in the eighth end, when Gardiner drew one and the skip with two fine bowls made it three. Encouraged by this success, Otahuhu followed with a couple of fours, and the board showed: Deare 16, Skoglund 12, on the twelfth head. But that was the nearest they got to victory, and they were eventually Beaten on the nineteenth by 28 to 15. The thirteenth was the vital head. After Skoglund had killed it once, his second Hotson trailed the jack only to see it run against one of Deare's back bowls. Hardie Neil drew another with a fortunate wick, and later Deare drew alongside to make it three. Skoglund gave away another, and Deare drew still another to make a beautiful five, and the score board showed 21 to 12 in the Aucklander's favour. In presenting the pennant with the other prizes, the Rotorua president, Mr. P. W. Dingwell, wished those players who had had to watch the final from the bank better luck next time, and referred to the outstanding play of George Deare. Both winner and runner-up responded.
