MATAMATA SPRINT

I SIR GRANT SURPRISES The Matamata Racing Club's meet- ', ing was held to-day in sweltering ' hot weather. The track was fast, and , there was a large attendance. ! The weather was sweltering hot and the attendance large. The track was fast. The locally trained Radiant Bay, recently successful on the Taranaki circuit, was made favourite for the Tirau Hurdles, and he went a splendid race to win decisively after being hard pressed by Native Chief and Dusky Morn at the final obstacle. Radiant Bay took up a prominent position in the early running, and when he established a break of four lengths with half a mile to go appeared likely to win easily. As a matter of fact he was going away in the last 20 yards, but at the same time had had enough. Bronze Trail and Surpeen were prominent in the middle stages \fhere Radiant Bay was running third just clear of Surwin. Dusky Morn and Acquest. Radiant Bay. Dusky Morn, Acquest and Native Chief then drew away to decide the issue between them. Dusky Morn hung on solidly to take third place a length and a half behind Native Chief, with Acquest a good fourth and Surwin and Surpai next. Star Vaals fell in the straight with a round to go. and Thomond Lad broke down and was pulled up when hopelessly out of the race. AH the Way Having his third run this season. Bevace was a solidly-backed third favourite for the First Railway Handicap, and, commencing smartly from No. 3, he was quickly in the lead, which he never surrendered. Tremain rode him a nice waiting race two lengths clear of the field, and he was hot seriously troubled in the straight, winning with something in reserve by a couple of lengths. Heroic Star. Minko, Golden Tom, Miss Wheriko, Noble Eagle and Prince Rewa followed Bevace to the home turn, where Prince Rewa forged ahead, and Llandine, the second favourite, made up ground. Prince Rewa maintained his effort to take second place two lengths clear of Llandine, after which came Miss Wheriko, Santa Anita and Heroic Star. Abbey Fox, a warm each-way favourite, was always buried in the ruck. Bonny Pay, champion two-year-old last season, was made favourite for the Waharoa Handicap, 'the open sprint at the Matamata Racing Club's meeting to-day, and he had another defeat chalked up against his record. On this occasion the little Autopay horse had everything, or almost everything, in his favour, as Dye jumped him out clear of the field and he led into the straight by two lengths, appearing to be going comfortably. The element against him was Babrow which, after trailing Dinky Di, Orwere and Viking Path, to the home turn—Bonny Pajwas always clear—came round the field to run to Bonny Pay at the half distance and go away to win in the easiest possible fashion by 21 lengths. Chain Acre ran on solidly from last position to take third place just ahead of Paymaster, which went wide on the home turn. Town Section and Viking Path were the next to finish. Sir Grant Easily Sir Grant, a failure on the recent Taranaki circuit, easily won the Second Railway. Handicap after having his success made comparatively easy by anticipating the jump-out. He was three lengths clear very quickly and was not worried to win by three lengths from Two Pals. The latter was favourite and although he was in second position early he once again lacked the pace to hold his place and gradually drifted back to sixth. He finished strongly and may have been hard to beat under other circumstances. Aroha Queen soon supplanted Two Pals in second place after the field had settled down and Mataka moved into third, with .Bronze Belle handy. Sir Grant had the race well won at the head of the home stretch, and both Two Pals and Skydonna came on solidly to take the minor positions, with Quination a moderate fourth. Aroha Queen was next, and then came Powys and Royal Sister. Results:— TIRAU HURDLES of £200. One mile and five furlongs. I—I—RADIANT BAY, b g. aged, by Illumination—Ngawhau (Mr. R. H.
