PTOMAINE DANGER
- '■'»'■■ CANNED FRUIT IN DUMPS Dame Rumour, busy lately among the rubbish dumps of Auckland, has been concerned with the City Council dump at. Westmere. In consequence the Star Office has received information from various sources about tins of wholesome fruit and jam being cast into the rubbish tips. One account spoke of as much as 600 cases of tins being thus thrown out. ' A Star representative who visited the dump this morning was shown a heap of tins which might have given rise to the rumours at present in circulation. A closer inspection, however, revealed that most of these tins were empty. The remainder were certainly sealed and full, but the bulging ends plainly indicated the. deteriorated condition of the contents. ■ . In spite of .constant supervision, adults as well as children are found in the dump area searching the garbage for something which the} r think is of value. The foreman at the dump pointed out a house in the distance, and said that the occupants of it had been among those who had searched amo'.ig the rubbish heaps. A visit by the doctor and the treatment of the whole family for ptomaine poisoning was the sequel to their misguided activities.
