TOJO'S THREAT

BLOWS ON AUSTRALIA "So Long As She Is Ally Of America And Britain" N.Z. Press Association. —Copyright Rec. 11.30 a.m. SYDNEY, this day. "Japan's attitude towards Australia is similar to her attitude towards ' Chungking," the Japanese Premier, General Tojo, told the Japanese Diet yesterday. "It is unavoidable, but we must inflict severe blows on Australia so long as she is an ally of the United States and Britain," he declared. Earlier in his speech Tojo said that the object of the war of Greater East Asia was to stabilise that area. In the first year of war Japan had consolidated her foothold in attaining the object of the war. Powerful bases won at suitable strategic points were being strengthened day by day, he said, and would be used both for offensive and defensive purposes. "In Malaya, Sumatra, Java and the Celebes and other places peace has been completely restored," declared Tojo. "A Burma for the Burmese is being constructed. This effort has so impressed our Government that it intends to recognise the independence of Burma this year. "The great deal of sincere co-opera-tion which is being given by the Philippines in building the Greater East Asia co-prosperity sphere indicates that the Filipinos will consummate the earliest opportunity for the promised independence of their land. "Now that the Republic of China has entered the war as an active participant Chungking becomes an enemy to the entire Chinese people. Japan will continue to deal telling blows to that regime."
