TRAINING AIRCRAFT
MANUFACTURE IN DOMINION (0.C.) " WELLINGTON, Saturday. The dc Havilland factory is now manufacturing training aircraft ready for use in the Dominion, only the engine and instruments being imported. In addition, overhaul and repair work of both airframes and engines is carried on at high pressure. Starting in a comparatively small way, the plant now employs more than 350 people, of whom 25 per cent are female workers, and the original single premises have been extended to include three more widely dispersed factories. It has been found, after exhaustive test of samples sent to Britain, that there are no New Zealand timbers suitable for aircraft construction, and the timber requirements are therefore all imported.
The output of the whole plant, apart from repair and overhaul sections, has been raised to a steady level in parallel with defence requirements. More than 250 new aeroplanes have been turned out, and new contracts call for many more.
