SOLDIER SENT TO BORSTAL
For the next 12 months, Keith McMinn, aged 19, soldier and jockey, will be under different control and discipline, and will not wear the battledress uniform he had on when he stood in the dock in the Police Court this morning. He pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing £7 belonging to John Ralph Jellard, on December 18.
Sub-Inspector Macnamara said McMinn was a gunner attached to a coastal battery, as was also the complainant, Jellard. On Friday night when he retired, Jellard hung his jacket which contained a wallet and £17 on the end of his bed. The next morning he discovered that £7 was missing. When seen McMinn admitted stealing the money. "Only a short while ago you were admitted to probation for theft, and now you are before the court again for stealing from a mate," the magistrate said to McMinn. "That shows you have no sense of honour. It is quite clear you want some proper discipline and control." Mr. Morling committed McMinn to the Borstal for 12 months, and made an order that the £7, which was recovered, should be returned to the complainant.
