PRICE OF BANANAS

70 AND 7iD PER POUND ALL SALES BY WEIGHT (P A.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Price Tribunal announced to-day that the retail price of bananas has been fixed at 7d a pound in the metropolitan areas of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, ana 7Jd elsewhere. The order makes it obligatory on retailers to sell bananas by weight instead of by count. The Tribunal states that investigations made show that the price fixed will enable a retailer to earn a margin of profit commensurate with the hazards involved, while enabling the fruit to reach the public at a price not out of proportion to the more difficult import conditions existing at the present time. The prices fixed were the maximum and for fruit in prime condition. Lower grades would necessarily be retailed at prices pro rata lower.
