VALOROUS CONDUCT
MEDAL FOB TIMARU AIRMAN
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Monday. The Distinguished Flying Medal has been awarded to Flight Sergeant, James Dudley Cayford Gumming, Royal New Zealand Air Forcc, for valorous conduct overseas, states official advice received by Air Headquarters. Flight Sergeant Cumming joined the air force five years ago. He was formerly a resident of Timaru. "Flight Sergeant Cumming was a member of the crew of an aircraft which during night operations in September successfully attacked an enemy ship," states the citation. "The aircraft was damaged by antiaircraft fire, which put the wireless equipment out of operation. In spite of wounds in both arms and thigh, Sergeant Cumming, after receiving first aid but still suffering much pain, effected temporary repairs to the wireless and was able to transmit a message indicating the position of the damaged aircraft. As wireless operator he has taken part in numerous sorties." Flight Sergeant Cumming was married in England last April and his wife resides at Gloucester. His father is Mr. W. A. Cumming. of Timaru.
