Awarded The Silver Star After
New Guinea Journey
MUST IN PACIFIC Special Australian Cori't-.-ponili-nt SYDNEY. October 7 Mr. Vein Ilaugland. the Associated Press war correspondent, has been awarded the United States Silver Star. General Mac-Arthur, supreme commander in the South-west Pacific. made the presentation to Mr. Haugland in a hospital somewhere in New Guinea.
'•[ cannot tell you how we havebeen inspired by your getting back," General Mac Arthur said to the young correspondent. Mr. Haugland, the first war correspondent to be decorated in the Pacific war. was lost for six weeks in the New Guinea jungle after baling out of a bomber early in August.
The citation says: "He struggled through nearly impenetrable jungiecovered mountain country until he reached an inhabited region near the coast. His courage and perseverance enabled him to conquer tremendous ditliculties and rejoin the United States Army forces."
