The U.S. Navy transport Wakefield, formerly the luxury liner Manhattan, as .he burned while heading homeward across the Atlantic. The burnt hulk was towed to an American east coast port. The bottom picture shows the troops and the crew in the stern waiting rescue by other ships of the convoy. There were 1600 persons aboard and all were taken off by naval craft. The fire started in one of the cabins.
