DISMISSED WORKERS
TWO APPEALS LODGED
Appeals lodged by Lawrence Walsh awl Cecil Charles Edwin Flavelle aJßnet the decision of the district manpower officer confirming their dismissal from defence work in the employment of F. J. Patten, a contractor, were heard by the Auckland Manpower (Industrial) Committee yesterday.
Walsh said that on the sccond day of his employment he was dismissed because he arrived five minutes late.
The chairman, Mr. J. O. Liddell, said that Walsh, who had volunteered for the work, had been there less than the seven days prescribed jn the regulations. The manpower officer had no right to give a decision regarding the dismissal. The case would be struck out as the committee had no Jurisdiction. Flavelle stated that, in his ease, he was waiting for timber to come through his machine and, in the meantime, he rolled a cigarette. He was spoken to by the foreman and words ensued which led to his dismissal. The foreman, L. J. Martin, said that Flavelle "*as given the option of carrying on with his work or finishing up, and he took the second course. The committee reserved its decision.
